Scenes from an apocalypse. But don’t worry, everything is planned and controlled. An astonishing treasure is hidden in the cliffs of Capo Caccia, in the area of Alghero, in Sardinia. A natural treasure that belongs to everyone and it is wonderful to find out with mask and fins during a snorkeling tour, or with scuba diving –starting from a well equipped diving center– to visit, in safety, unique caves in the Mediterranean Sea. Here there are true masterpieces of nature: stalactites, stalagmites, lace in calcite that even the most skilled craftsmen would struggle to reproduce. (altro…)

Whoever visits the area of Alghero, cannot renounce to a snorkeling trip, including a tour of the cliffs. Capo Caccia, the silent giant which dominates the Riviera del Corallo (Coral Riviera), symbolizes strength and unopposed nature, and is often even inaccessible. A huge cape of chalky rock located in the western side of Sardinia, which rises up from the sea to a height of 186 metres. At the highest point, we find the meteorological station of Capo Caccia, which hosts also the lighthouse; which is one of the most important and visible in the entire Mediterranean sea (visible from around 32 kilometres).
The sides of sheer snow-white rock which fall off into the sea, are inaccessible shelters for several specimens of animal; in particular for birds and raptors, which build their nests, exploiting the clefts and ridges of the cliffs.
A very striking tour, during which tourists are protagonists of an unforgettable experience, enjoying the grandeur of Capo Caccia and closely admiring caves and ravines which can be reached only by sea; including little natural paradises like the Isola Foradada (Foradada Island) and the Isola Piana (Piana Island).
Groups of up to max. 14 persons, are equipped with wet suits, flippers, and diving masks, including a buoy; an expert guide of the seabed of the Protected Marine Area accompanies the snorkeling tours.

It is one of the most stunning places easily reachable by visitors and was discovered by chance by a local fisherman in the Eighteenth century. It is accessible both by sea (departures from the port of Alghero or from the boarding pier of Cala Dragunara, just after the enchanting Tramariglio bay), and by land, through the Escala del Cabirol (Stairs of Roebuck), with its 656 steps running along the cliff, and rising up from the sea, just in front of the Isola Foradada (Foradada Island). The inside is breathtaking and the tourist route winds its way through several rooms, with each one presenting different features: the Lamarmora Lake, an underground salt lake which is 9 metres deep, 100 metres long, and 25 metres wide; with a stalagmite column named Acquasantiera (Stoop) at its center. Another stalagmite rises from the bed of the lake and is called Albero di Natale (Christmas Tree). There are also the rooms of the Reggia (Palace), of the Rovine (Ruins), of the Organo (Organ), of Trine e Merletti (Lace and Lacemaking) and of the Tribuna della Musica (Tribune of the Music), which dominate the room of the Reggia (Palace).
The service of guided visit is available all year long. Visits to the site are possible from Easter to October, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. To reach the cave by land, once arrived at the square in Capo Caccia, just read all information on the visit procedures provided on the dedicated wallboard. Instead, to reach the cave by sea, take the motor ship which sails from the port in Alghero.
Further information are available at the tourist office in Alghero (tel. 0039.079.979054).
Not too far from the Grotta della Madonnina (the Cave of the Madonna), on a seabed of 43 metres, a wide underwater cliff begins; completely covered by large red and yellow fans, which are moved by the current. They are the gorgons, colonial organisms consisting of octopuses which are, in some aspects, very similar to corals. The dive, even if difficult, is particularly scenic, because the plateau presents several cracks and burrows ,which provide shelter to moray eels, rockfishes, breams, groupers and octopuses. But looking deeper into the ravines, it is also possible to spot clawed lobsters and spin lobsters.
Departure: the dive point is 5 minutes away from the ArchiMete tourist centre by rubber boat.
Route: it is a classic dive, recommended only to expert divers.
Depth: maximum 34 metres.
To see: wide stretches of gorgons, swaying in the light underwater current of Capo Caccia. In the ravines, which begin among the surrounding rocks, octopuses, moray heels, but also spin lobsters and clawed lobsters find shelter. With just a turn of your head towards the blue of the open sea, it is possible to admire the passage of pelagic fishes, like barracudas, amberjacks, sea breams and breams.
Length of the exploration: 50 minutes without decompression.
Price includes: scuba tank and ballast, transfer by rubber boat, diving and naturalistic guide inside the cave, washing and storage of the equipment.
Further information: the tourist centre ArchiMete offers the possibility to buy cheap diving packages, which allow one to experience the wonders of the Protected Marine Area of Capo Caccia-Isola Piana. The offer can be combined with trekking and snorkeling routes, in addition to naturalistic activities proposed by ArchiMete. See also the section “Discover our offers” in the homepage of the website.
It is one of the most classic dives for those who visit the Riviera del Corallo (Coral Riviera). An easy excursion, which is also rich in many points of interest. The cave is located in the last ramification of Capo Caccia, and extends towards the eastern side. At 15 metres depth, begins the spectacular Grotta della Madonnina (Cave of the Madonna), taking its name from a small aedicule with the image of the Blessed Virgin, which is located right outside the water, and anchored onto a nearby cliff. Once you have visited the underwater cave, the dive continues along fallen rocks; big rocks turn into natural balconies from which it is possible to admire, undisturbed, the passage of big pelagic fishes, like amberjacks, sea breams, barracudas and, sometimes, even dolphins.
Departure: the cave is 5 minutes away from the ArchiMete tourist centre by rubber boat.
Route: the cave is on one level and the exploration is easy and enjoyable.
Depth: maximum 21 metres, the cave entrance is located at 12 metres depth.
To see: the walls of the underwater cave are covered by colorful sponges and sea daisies, and it is easy to come across congers, spin lobsters, weasels and even some shy octopuses, which safely hide inside their unmistakable nests made up by small piles of rocks. Photographers and underwater video operators really appreciate the cave, because of the lighting conditions and the varieties of rooms it offers.
Length of the exploration: 1 hour
Price includes: scuba tank and ballast, transfer by rubber boat, diving and naturalistic guide inside the cave, washing and storage of the equipment.
